Na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL), a investigação não é apenas um complemento ao ensino, mas um pilar central que sustenta a sua evolução e relação com a comunidade. Ao transformar a "necessidade do doente" na "pergunta de investigação", a FMUL assume o compromisso ético de converter descobertas laboratoriais em benefícios clínicos diretos — o conceito fundamental de "bench to bedside".
A FMUL está particularmente bem posicionada para cumprir esta visão porque integra e dinamiza um ecossistema único em Portugal, o Centro Académico de Medicina de Lisboa (CAML), que é composto pela ULS Santa Maria (ULSSM), a Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa (ESEL) e duas entidades cuja missão primária é a investigação: o Medicine ULisboa for Health, Clinical Research & Innovation (MUHCRI) e o Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM).
As relações próximas e profundas entre estas estruturas, criam um ciclo virtuoso onde a ciência básica e a prática clínica comunicam em tempo real. Esta simbiose garante que a formação de médicos e nutricionistas esteja na vanguarda da evidência, promovendo o pensamento crítico e a inovação.
Ao aliar rigor científico a uma visão integrativa, a FMUL atrai talento internacional e fomenta parcerias globais, elevando os padrões dos cuidados de saúde em Portugal. Investigar neste contexto é mais do que gerar conhecimento; é investir na autonomia estratégica do país e numa economia de alto valor. Na FMUL, preparamos os profissionais do futuro imersos numa cultura de descoberta, prontos para liderar a medicina global e garantir a sustentabilidade do sistema de saúde.
MUHCRI (Medicine ULisboa for Health, Clinical Research & Innovation) is a structural unit of FMUL dedicated to patient-oriented research. It integrates the multidisciplinary expertise of the CAML community to maximize societal impact and quality of clinical innovation.
MUHCRI is a research community hub that brings together over 600 researchers across 65+ groups to effectively bridge the gap from "bench to bedside." Our work spans the entire discovery spectrum—from fundamental laboratory science to clinical applications and large-scale population health initiatives.
Our activity is organized into
six focused research areas
and three transversal axes:
Research Areas:
Cardiovascular, Preventive & Environmental, Neuro, Immune, Metabolic & Nutritional, and Women, Children & Adolescent Health.
Transversal Axes:
Mechanisms of Disease, Technologies and Data Science, and Ethics and Medical Humanities.
By forging strategic global partnerships leveraging state-of-the-art technology, and providing professional research management, MUHCRI empowers investigators to turn bold visions into medical breakthroughs that transform lives and propel society forward.
